Green Bay Packers vs SF 49ers Wild Card Weekend Preview

nfc 2013

Going into Monday November 4th’s divisional game with the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers were sitting on a 5-2 record looking like a team that was going to make a serious run at home field advantage in the NFC playoffs. Aaron Rodgers brought the Packers down the field on the opening drive and then settled for a field goal after being sacked by Shea McClellin. After that sack Rodgers went to the locker room and never came back in the game. The Packers fought the whole game, but ended up losing 27-20 when the defense couldn’t make a stop to give Seneca Wallace a chance to tie the game. The result of the game was bad, but the news on Rodgers was worse. Rodgers had a fractured collarbone and was expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Rodgers ended up missing 7 games and the Packers went 2-4-1 over those 7 games. Rodgers came back against the Bears in week 17 and lead the Packers on a 4th quarter touchdown drive that put the Packers into the playoffs thanks to a TON of help from the Bears and Detroit Lions.

* Lions finished the season by going 1-6 (including losses to TB Buccaneers, NY Giants and the Minnesota Vikings)

* Bears finished the season 3-5 after the win against the Packers on November 4th

That is how we got to the Green Bay Packers winning the NFC North and hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Lambeau Field. The 49ers have beat the Packers pretty handily over the last 3 games; week 1 in 2012, NFC Wild Card playoffs 2012 and week 1 this year. The 49ers believe they own the Packers and it is easy to understand why. If you add in the fact that the Packers will be without the “playmaker” Clay Matthews and an important run stopper Johnny Jolly the 49ers should be favored and they are, by 2.5 points (the last I saw). What is it going to take for the the Packers to beat the 49ers on Sunday in sub-zero temperatures?

Keys to Winning

1. The Packers need to embrace the cold on Sunday. As of right now the forecast is called for a high of -6 and low of -20.  The players need to show that they are the ones that play in Green Bay and not let the 49ers get comfortable. The best case scenario would be to win the coin toss, take the ball and put together a long opening drive and keep the 49ers offense on the sidelines trying to stay warm.

2. Stop Colin Kaepernick from running. Yes, Kapernick threw for over 400 yards in the week 1 match-up, but the weather is going to make it hard to pass and that will help the Packers defense. Without Jolly and Matthews the task of stopping Kaepernick is going to tough. AJ Hawk is going to have to step up even more than he has and have a career game. The defense is going to need to keep outside containment and stay in their lanes. This is going to be a tough task.

3. The Packers need to stick with the run and wear down the 49ers defense. Once the 49ers put an extra man in the box the Packers can pull out the play action and have the 49ers guessing in the second half. Eddie Lacy and James Starks are a great 1-2 punch and they need to show it on Sunday. If the Packers can win the turnover battle, then they can win the game.

Player of the Game

AJ Hawk needs to have a career game

For the Packers to win this game the defense is going to have to play a perfect game. AJ Hawk will need to be the leader he has been all season and more. I am not expecting the one handed interception like he had against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I expect a forced fumble, double digit tackles and a sack.

Prediction

The winner of the game between the 49ers and Packers will go to the Super Bowl. I see a low scoring game with the Packers pulling out the victory 24-20.

James Avery aka Uncle Passes Away at the Age of 68

Obit-James-Avery-1

James Avery of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” passed away from complications from open heart surgery on New Year’s Eve. Uncle Phil was such a great character, this was a rich man who instilled work ethic into his children. Even though Carlton wanted to have the silver spoon, Uncle Phil would not let him. This is a man who stepped up to help his struggling nephew Will and be the father figure he needed, even when Will’s father shows up and Phil expects him to burn Will again. Avery played this character perfectly and I am not sure any other actor could have done better. The show would have been doomed if Avery left, like the original Aunt Vivian did.

So for that thank you James Avery for the memories and rest in peace. Most of us 30 somethings learned a lot of great lessons from Uncle Phil that will stay with us for a long, long time!

Master Sergeant Returns from Deployment Early and Surprises Son on Football Field Dressed as Opposing Team!

via USVethub.com

This video was produced by the United States Air Force and Spangdahlem Air Base.

Master Sergeant Joseph Martel recently returned home from deployment and wanted to surprise his son!

Wow! What a beautiful moment on the 50-Yard Line of a football field. His son, practically a grown man himself, broke down in tears and understandably so. This has to be one of the best military surprise return home around.

Master Sergeant Joseph Martel served overseas in Afghanistan with the United States Air Force. Thank you for your service Master Sergeant Martel and thanks for letting us share in your very special moment!

These videos get me every time! If they don’t get you I am not sure we should know each other. I cried instantly once the father took off his helmet. We need to be more mindful when we are complaining about our problems because there is always someone who has it worse. The son lived everyday not knowing if he will get news that his father was killed in Afghanistan protecting our rights while we sit here and complain about our iPhone being slow or our order at Applebees being incorrect.

Take the time this holiday season to think of those that have family members that are deployed and serving our great country! If you are truly moved you can check out Adopt a US Solider to find ways to can support our troops that are deployed.

Baby Deba Alert…Could We Have a Christmas Baby?

hannah

Wow, feelings like it has been a while since I have written about Hannah. The last time I wrote about her was “Birth Class and Getting Ready” and that was pretty short. I don’t even know where to start to be honest.

No big deal, met TJ Duckett in Indianapolis

No big deal, met TJ Duckett in Indianapolis

We’ll start with how awesome Kate has been the last few weeks. First of all let’s talk about the surprise she gave me last weekend. Knowing that myself and some friends do a football trip each year, she over heard me telling my friends that I was not going to go this year due to Hannah and the chance that I wouldn’t have a job. So of course Kate decided to start scheming and planned for me to go with my friends to Indianapolis for the B1G 10 Championship between Michigan St and Ohio St. She really pushed me to go and I’m glad she did because it was a blast!

Kate has been a trooper when it comes to carrying Hannah. Not only is she working full time as a teacher until she goes into labor, but she is coaching two basketball teams during the week and tutoring on Sunday. This chick is amazing and we (Jacob, Hannah and I) are lucky to have her! Everyone talks about how much their wife, finace or girlfriend’s complained about the pregnancy, but Kate has been amazing. Yeah, I get the “I’m tired” a lot and she goes to bed by like 9:00 pm and once in a while she talks about her back hurting, but it really hasn’t phased me at all! Just try to be supportive and know that I am going to have to get a thick skin for when she goes into labor because I think that is when it is all going to come out!

New Year Baby?

New Year Baby?

So when is Hannah going to get here? Since I found out the due date (Jan 12) I have been saying that December 29 is going to be the date and the information that we got last week, I could be correct! Last week Kate had her weekly check-up and we found out that she is 2 cm dilated, 50% effaced and in the -2 position. The short of the short is that the doctor doesn’t believe she is going the full 40 weeks. Tomorrow Kate has the next weekly check-up so we will find out if she has dilated, effaced or dropped anymore. Again, the way that this kid moves around I still think she is trying to claw her way out. I don’t know if we are going to get a Christmas baby, but I am pretty sure we are going to be celebrating the New Year with Hannah in our arms! I hope this is the case because our entire family is ready to meet her as soon as possible.

With that being said, you are all probably asking…”so are you guys ready?” Well the apartment is about as ready as it is ever going to be and we have all of the things we need so yeah I would say that we are good to go!

P.S. I know that everyone is asking for some belly shots, but I am getting shut down. So you’ll have to settle for baby pictures when she gets here!
