More Proof Boston Loves Big Papi!

Mayor David Ortiz — it has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

While New York City elected Red Sox fan Bill de Blasio as mayor of the Big Apple, Boston nearly one-upped NYC (once again) by electing an actual Red Sox player. According to WGBH via Deadspin, Ortiz received the most write-in votes in the city’s mayoral election earlier this week.

Records indicate that there were 560 total write-ins but it’s unclear exactly how many the Sox DH received.

Ortiz just wrapped winning his third World Series with the Sox and was the recipient of the 2013 World Series MVP trophy after batting .688 and posting a 1.948 OPS. Big Papi has quite the relationship with current mayor Thomas Menino.

“That’s my man, you know. Me and Menino, we go way back and we always do a lot of things together,” Ortiz said earlier this week. “Knowing he was going to retire, it was a shock. We’ve had Mayor Menino over, what, 20 years? He’s done an incredible job through the years. I wasn’t ready to see him retire, but it happens to all of us. “I was proud to get to know him through the years, doing things with him, especially for kids. I love kids. He encouraged me to do things like that,” Ortiz added. “The political side — I don’t know about that and I stay away from that. He just told me, ‘Go get ’em, tiger.’”

ortiz1Big Papi being Mayor would hurt the city of Boston because he would probably have to retire from baseball and not help the Red Sox try to win back to back World Series Championships next season. This is pretty amazing though that people were like “hey, let’s write in Big Papi” and it was a significant amount. The biggest question has to be, would it be Mayor David Ortiz or would it be Mayor Big Papi? Let’s go to the poll…

World Series Game 6 National Anthem to be Played by the Dropkick Murphy’s

Who’s ready for game 6 tonight? I’ll be honest that since the Atlanta Braves lost to the LA Dodgers I have not followed baseball at all. My friend called me a fake Red Sox fan and guess what? it is true because as he knows I am a Braves fan. The World Series has been great with all the controversies and weird plays, I probably will only flip back and forth from the game tonight because I don’t want to jinx the Red Sox, but I will make sure to watch long enough to see the Dropkick Murphy’s kick the game off with our National Anthem! They are sure to get the crowd rocking and help with the home field advantage. Hey Red Sox Nation, time to get #Bostonstrong. Good Luck Sox, finish them off!

P.S. Do it for Tessie!

Atlanta Braves Magic Number is 1#Choptober

The Atlanta Braves blew a 5-1 lead yesterday against the Chicago Cubs, but put up 4 runs in the top of the ninth to clinch a tie for the NL East title. The Braves play the Cubs today 4:05 pm with a chance to join the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers as division winners. This will be the Braves first division title since 2007. Let’s go it Braves!

P.S. Jason Heyward was back in the lead off spot for the Braves yesterday! Do you remember THIS?

Young Red Sox Fan Outsmarts Yankees Coach

I have been to about 30 baseball games, the closet I ever came to getting a foul ball was at Shea Stadium. We were walking to grab some beers and it almost hit my friend in the head and bounced into a souvenir stand. We asked for the ball since it almost hit us, but the attendant said no! Kinda BS if you ask me, aren’t baseball games supposed to be about the fans?

Watch here to see a young Boston Red Sox fan get a foul ball handed to him by a New York Yankees coach over the weekend at Fenway Park!

Can you say BAWSE?!?!?!

Just throw a Yankee hat over my Red Sox gear and I am bound to dupe the Yankees into giving me a ball because I “root” for them! Maybe if I thought of this I would have gotten myself a ball at a game in my life!

P.S. You have to love that the kid put the hat on top of his Red Sox hat! His action practically says I would rather not let that gross logo on my head!

P.S.S. Can Red Sox Nation blame Saturday’s loss on this kid for using Yankee gear to get what he wants? Is this a new curse? Only time will tell…

Where Do My Sports Alliances Come From?

Sports fans are crazy! We love our teams, no matter what their records are they are the best team in their respective league! We buy expensive hats, jerseys and game tickets. You see on television how crazy fans are, throwing squid on the ice in Detroit, the Black Hole and Cheeseheads come to mind. Where does this love for our teams come from? How is it formed?

I have no statistics to back this up, but I would be willing to bet most people like their teams because of two main reasons

1. Geographical Region

2. Family

With that being said, my personal sports following has taken many different shapes over time and there are a few different reasons, but here is the story on how I got to where I am today!

I get asked all the time why my following is all over the place. NFL = Green Bay Packers MLB = Atlanta Braves NHL = Boston Bruins NBA = Boston Celtics

So how did I get here?

Family and Geographical Region had something to do with it, but not what you would think. When I started following sports my mom and dad were still together, we lived in Massachusetts and my dad followed all the local teams (Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins). I did not get along with my father so I did not want to like his teams! Therefore, I started making decisions for myself around the age of 10. Let’s take it league by league;

NFL

Tecmo Super Bowl was a big influence into the Packers!

Tecmo Super Bowl was a big influence into the Packers!

The year was 1990-91, Tecmo Super Bowl was the most popular Nintendo game out there! I remember owning a San Francisco 49ers gold jacket and so didn’t everyone else, I said I don’t want to be like everyone else and like the 49ers or the Dallas Cowboys or the L.A. Raiders. Once I played Tecmo Super Bowl I loved the color of the Packers jerseys and then I fell in love with Sterling Sharpe, finally I did a little research on the Packers and realized that this was the team I wanted to follow and for almost 25 years I have been one of the biggest supporters out there, going to Lambeau Field twice to support my team and watching them win two Super Bowls (one over the hated Patriots) and lose one.

NBA

My favorite Reggie Miller moment!

My favorite Reggie Miller moment!

What can I say, I am cocky! So when I was making a decision on who to follow for basketball I loved the player that Reggie Miller was! Three point shooter and cocky as all hell. Needless to say I started following the Indiana Pacers during the 90s and early 2000s, but once Miller retired I lost some love for the Pacers because they just weren’t the same team. I also lost some love for the NBA during this time, the league got boring and just looked like playground basketball so I didn’t really follow any teams. In 2007, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were traded to the Boston Celtics and since I was living in Massachusetts and my dad was not in the picture it was time to come back to the Celtics, the fact that they were going to be the odds on favorite to win the championship didn’t hurt.

NHL

The beast!

Very easy, up until 4-5 years ago I couldn’t stand hockey, but I actually started watching it and now I love it. I have friends that are Boston Bruins fans so it made sense to me. I guess I picked a good time to start following hockey, one Stanley Cup championship and another trip to the finals!

MLB

Again pretty easy, had to get away from the Red Sox, so thank you Massachusetts for having TBS and not the Yes Network! The Braves were on TBS pretty much everyday and again I got lucky (mostly because I am not a dirty Yankee fan!) because I started watching the Braves the year they went worst to first and didn’t look back for 14 years! Amazing! (During my time at Elms College I cheered hard for the Boston Red Sox in support of my friends and that was a fun time to be with them during the Red Sox two World Series wins! I still wear Red Sox shirts, but I am a Braves fan)

Who remembers Atlanta Braves baseball on TBS?
